Inspired by founder of Manitoba Louis Riel, over 100 athletes gathered just north west of Eckville to take part in this year’s Louis Riel Race.

This year’s relay began at the Gimlet Community Centre and included a two-mile run, a mile of horse backing, three miles of pedal bike and a six-mile canoe ride.

Co-organizer Tanner Lawton said the community support has been great over the last couple of years, with everyone embracing the event.

“Everybody loves watching it and participating actually too because it’s not too strenuous. It’s a good day to relax and just canoe, bike, ride and just get out for the season.”

It’s the second annual event in recent history, but Lawton said there was a time when it was popular.

“They used to have it back in the 80’s here and actually got it from out east somewhere in Manitoba.”

“My dad seen it on TV and they (his friends) thought of bringing it here and trying it out. It’s just a fun event for peopel to do. The last time they had it (here) was in 87.”

Competitors enjoyed a hot cooked meal after the event and prizes were given out to the best-dressed relay team.
