Saturday marked Football Day in Lacombe, showcasing some of the best minor football teams in Central Alberta.

Highlighting the pack of teams were the Lacombe Explosions, who beat the Red Deer Steelers 34-22 and the Lacombe Raiders who beat the Drumheller Titans 50-31.

Team manager with the Raiders and volunteer Rose Crouse was quick to give thanks to everyone who helped make the day happen.

“Some organizations ask for money if they don’t want to help, but here it’s all parent orientated. We’re all a big family and everybody knows everybody. We all look after each others kids and yeah, it’s all about the volunteers.”

With so many people coming out to enjoy Football Day in Lacombe, Crouse said it’s exciting to see the growth of football in Lacombe.

“Football was non-existent more or less in Lacombe and it’s a big thing for us now. We (Lacombe and Area Minor Football) play everywhere from Drumheller, Strathmore, Red Deer Olds, you name it.”

“We play all over the place.”

Lacombe Atom Chargers, who fielded two teams, Red and White, were also involved in a five-team tournament with Rocky Mountain House, Sylvan Lake and Stettler.

Red and White battled it out in the championship game, but didn't keep score and were both considered winners.
