Lacombe is playing host to one of Alberta’s top football recruiting camps this weekend.

Tryouts for the ABC Border Bowl began today at MEGlobal Athletic Park and will wrap up Sunday evening.

ABC Border Bowls are games that take place between all-star teams from Alberta and British Columbia.

Creator and Director of the ABC Border Bowl Ron Dias began the program with the idea of bringing top prospects from Alberta and British Columbia to the spotlight in terms of scouting and recruiting.

“There are so many great players. Football Alberta and those programs do a great job identifying 40 great players at the different age groups.”

“We just want to make sure that the next 40 and the 40 after that, also have opportunities to play in high-level events.”

Dias said this weekend is great for rural kids who don’t get the same exposure as those who play in the bigger cities.

This year’s ABC Border Bowl take place in Lethbridge May 27th, where the best in each age group from Alberta and BC will battle it out against each other.

Dias assured some of the country’s top scouts will be watching.

“We make sure schools are looking at these games and once they confirm to us they’re looking at the games, they get the roster and they get the link (to watch online).”

“Once they tell us, ‘I like this boy’, then we send them all their contact information. It’s a great tool.”

The four groups are Young Stars (Grade 6-7), Future Stars (Grade 8-9), Rising Selects (Grade 9-10) and Rising Stars (Grade 10-11).
