The Lacombe Generals scored six goals in the first period to beat the Rosetown Red Wings 7-5 on Sunday afternoon, avenging a loss suffered the night before where they struggled to find the net.

In the second game of a back-to-back at the Sportsplex, Jesse Todd notched a hat trick in the opening frame. Brad Stebner, Kyle Bailey and Dylan Nowakowski also scored for the Generals.

“It just seemed to go in. First two shots, two goals. Can’t ask for anything better than that,” Todd said.

“We weren’t happy with losing yesterday so we wanted to have a good start and you couldn’t ask for a better start than 6-1 after one.”

Lacombe chased Wings starter Tyler Steel midway through the period with three goals scored on their first five shots.

He was replaced by Brody Hoffman, who stopped 43 shots in a 4-1 Wings victory the night before. Sunday, he gave up three goals on 35 shots in relief.

The Wings scored late on the power play to end the first period

They added three more goals in the second period, to the Generals’ one, from Eric Galbraith.

Jesse Todd scored a first period hat trick for the Generals against the Rosetown Red Wings on Sunday afternoon.

Rosetown inched closer with another goal in the third to make it 7-5.

“This game is a game of momentum and we had it all in the first. Then they come back. They’re obviously not happy with a period like that,” Todd said.

“They push back and we kind of took some penalties. They were able to get a bunch of goals and made it way closer than it needed to be.”

Jacob Deserres started in net for the Generals, making 34 saves.

It was the first regulation loss for first-place Rosetown, 16 games into the season.

The teams will meet two more times before the regular season ends, pivotal games as Rosetown sits 10 points ahead of Lacombe for first place.

But before that happens, the Generals host Innisfail on Wednesday night.
