It took overtime to get it done, but the Lacombe Generals got the win in Saturday night's game against the Innisfail Eagles.

The Generals beat the Eagles 5-4 inside the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex in front of a packed house.

Head Coach Curtis Austring said the Eagles aren’t an easy team to play against and was happy with the effort from the team.

“They come out with a hard forecheck. They’ve got some guys out there who really try to lay the body so you really have to be aware of what’s going on around you and they just compete hard,” said Austring.

“We put in the effort to give ourselves the opportunity (to win)."

The Generals took a 4-1 lead into the third period, but watched the lead evaporate after getting into penalty trouble late in the frame.

“You don’t see too many 5-on-3s straight for a few minutes, but we stuck with it and we’re happy to come out with the win,” said Austring.

The Generals had some help up front with the addition of forward Eric Galbraith, who played his first game with team on Saturday night.

Galbraith spent last year playing with France and set up Teegan Moore’s overtime goal for his first point as a General.

“I pulled out of the corner and walked into the slot and he was open. I softly touched it to him and he made a heck of shot,” said Galbraith.

He said he was impressed with the competition level and spent a lot of the game adjusting to his new teammates.

“I was a little rusty,” said Galbraith.

"But it’s still hockey and like riding a bike so it will probably take me a couple of games to get my stride, but overall it’s a good group of guys and I’m excited.”

What surprised him the most was how physical it was out there, but he said teammates gave him a heads up before they got on the ice.

“I got in the dressing room and everybody was telling me to keep my head up tonight because Innisfail plays a blue collar game and a rough game,” said GalBraith.

“The boys were really helpful with that point.”

Sunday's game against the Red Deer College Kings was cancelled. Generals host the Rosetown Redwings next Saturday night. Game time is 8 p.m.
