Lacombe Generals beat the Stony Plain Eagles in their final game of the Chinook Hockey League regular season on Friday.

Generals scored nine goals for a 9-7 win over the Eagles, a battle of the league’s top two teams.

Up 7-2 to begin the third period, the Eagles battled back on a few occasions, but weren’t able to catch the high-flying Generals.

“It was a bit of an up-and-down game. We’re running a bit of a shorter bench with some guys away plus the penalties and the 10-minute misconducts,” said Generals Head Coach Curtis Austring.

“It disrupted the flow a little bit, but we held on.”

In maybe the most physical game of the season which included many punches thrown, Austring said it was hockey at its finest.

“It’s a contact sport, if you want the puck back you’re going to have to hit somebody and if you want to keep it you’re going to endure some physical play,” said Austring.

“I think some guys were chomping at the bit to be a little more physical and engage in some altercations to prove a point.”

Generals forward Brandon Magee had a huge game scoring twice and adding four helpers in the win, but was quick to mention the help he got from his linemates.

“I give the credit to my teammates.  Sheener, (Riley Sheen) Rauckser (Chris Rauckman) and Cleoder (Alec Macleod) all played really well tonight,” said Magee.

“I was just getting the pucks to them and they were able to find the back of the net.”

Magee finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists).

“He’s a gamer,” said Austing.

“He loves competing, he’s got exceptional talent, he’s got great vision and a great shot.”

Generals finished first in the Chinook Hockey League with a record of 19-3 and are expected to play the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs beginning Saturday night in Lacombe.
