The Lacombe Generals won their ninth straight game, beating the Stony Plain Eagles 5-2 on Saturday night at home.

Billy Marshall, Kyle Bailey, Brett Robertson, Nathan Deck and Tanner Korchinski all scored for Lacombe while Steven Stanford made 26 saves.

Bailey said players had their captain Don Morrison on their minds, after he suffered a neck injury last week.

“He ended up getting a fracture in his neck. It was obviously really scary. Anyone who knows Don Morrison, he’s the heartbeat of this team,” Bailey said.

“He’s our captain and a huge part of what we do on and off the ice.”

According to Bailey, Morrison, a defenceman, had surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

In the meantime, he said the team’s fortunate to have a deep blueline.

“We’re lucky that we have enough of a core back there that there are people that are able to fill the void and fill the void very admirably. I think of a guy like Tanner Korchinski that maybe doesn’t play a lot of minutes regularly but stepped in tonight. I thought he was just exceptional for us tonight.”
