Central Alberta Buccaneers collected close to 2,500 lbs of food for the Lacombe Food Bank, in their annual food drive on Saturday.

It was just short of their goal of 3,000 lbs, but Bucs Chairman Mark Fay said they're still happy with the support from the community.

“I grew up in Red Deer and I’ve been around Lacombe for the last four or five years being with the Bucs and every year it amazes me with how tight of a community it is.”

“Everybody is willing to pitch in when they can.”

Players took to the streets, going door-to-door; something Fay said he's proud of.

“Lots of guys have families, they have kids, they have wives and we have young guys who may want to do something else on Saturday, but it means a lot when they all come together for a good cause and enjoy doing it.”

Bucs are gearing up for another season and will head to Grande Prairie for their season opener against the Drillers on May 27.
