Brandon Leyh threw six touchdowns in the first half as the Central Alberta Buccaneers routed the Lloydminster Vandals 64-19 at Great Chief Park on Saturday.

In just one half of work, the quarterback connected twice each with Preston Bailey and Josh Blanchard, and with Ben Hnatiuk and Cam Heslop.

“We got our flow pretty early, we just made it happen. Receivers were making plays, guys were open … got in a nice rhythm early on, it was good,” Leyh said.

“Our offensive line’s been fantastic all year, even in our big loss against Fort Mac, our offensive line played incredible and we had the time to throw the ball, we just weren’t connecting. Today, I had as much time as I needed, to say the least.”

Also in the first half, Tanner Olstad returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second straight game and defensive back Ashton Jones returned an interception for a major.

By halftime, the Bucs led 57-7.

Hnatiuk caught his second touchdown of the night from Judah Knip in the third quarter.

With the victory, the Buccaneers improve to 2-1 on the season.

Leyh said while the team’s still shaking the rust off.

“We’re close but we’re not there yet though. We missed a couple of balls we that we probably shouldn’t have missed. Receivers were open, I over threw it, just missed. But for the most part we’re getting there for sure,” he said.

“Personally, I only played two games after taking a year-and-a-half off. That’s tough to come back from so there’s going to be hiccups for sure.”

The team will visit the Calgary Wolfpack on June 23 and return home on July 7 to host St Albert.
