Athletes from Central Alberta travelled to Lacombe this past weekend to compete in a swim meet.

Lacombe Dolphin Swim Club hosted “Big Splash 2017” at the Lacombe Kinsmen Aquatic Centre Friday night and all day Saturday.

Over 200 swimmers from six different clubs tested their times, in both relay and individual races.

Kathy Bargholz, Officials Chair of the Lacombe Dolphin Swim Club, said this year’s competition was as good as she’s ever seen.

“We encourage the kids to compete with themselves, so can you beat your time? Versus can you always be first. No, we want them to have fun and we want them to best themselves and to be better at the swim themselves.”

Starter Rob Craven has been involved with the club for years and said kids always love these swim meets.

“The kids have a great time. They’re with their club, they have a great time with the relays and they hang out together all day.”

“It’s an individual sport, but it’s also a team sport, so the kids love doing the relays together and they just have a great time all day.”

Swimmers competed in butterfly, front, back and breast stroke.

Lacombe Dolphin Club has been in existence since the 1960’s. This year, the club has 63 members.
