Some young Red Deer Minor Hockey players will receive special on ice instruction, with learning events for parents and coaches too as part of Alberta Hockey Day on Saturday.

Hockey Alberta is hosting the second annual Alberta Hockey Day, growing last year's one stop event to 6 regional events.

Manager of Hockey Development Jesse Hale says they'll be spending time with the 5 year old hockey program in Red Deer.

“I’ll be on the ice leading those sessions with I think about 75 kids we will have, so we’ll just work with those kids and their coaches as far as what an ideal practice should look like, station set up, small ice teaching skills and having some fun. Just making sure that we’re showcasing how invitation hockey should be played. We are really focused on half-ice and cross-ice games, encouraging more puck touches and repetitions, more involvement and more fun for the kids.””

Hale says a couple of teams from Sylvan Lake who are doing some great work at the initiation level will also get to hit the ice during intermission at the Rebels game Saturday night as part of the day.
