From Maureen MacKenzie, Executive Assistant of Community Services for the City of Lacombe.:

Artist Larry Hunter is installing a new mural this week on the back wall of the strip mall where Dollarama is located in Lacombe.

When the community favorite Nanton Street Mural on the Yu-turn building disappeared due to construction, we knew we wanted to re-create it somewhere else.

A call was put out to muralists to create a new Nanton Street mural.   Using historical photos from the early 1900’s or the 1940’s and 50’s, the artists could choose the era they wanted to re-create.

Of all the submissions received, the Art Collection Committee selected Larry Hunter’s vision titled “Hey Doreen”, which depicts Nanton Street in 1949.

It features a resident driving a stunning red 1949 Chev truck, and giving a wave to Doreen, who is walking down the street.

The mural was digitally created by Larry Hunter, and is vinyl mounted on diebond panels which is very durable.

A unique feature of this mural is the Chev truck is ‘bumped out’ from the rest of the mural, giving it a two-dimensional feel.

The Art Collection Committee appreciated Larry’s attention to detail in the buildings and how he matched their historical colors as well.

This new mural is a departure from past murals due to the technique used to create it, and the style it was created in.

Art is something that is always evolving, and this piece takes Lacombe to the next level of public art.   We’re very proud to bring this mural to Lacombe for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come.
