Funding awarded to support development between Red Deer and County 

The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County have been awarded grant funding from the Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) Program.  

Through the program, $100,000 has been allocated for joint regional growth and economic development.  

“The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County have a strong future of partnership and cooperation on issues of mutual interest. This funding from the NRED Project grant allows us to undertake work that fosters prosperity and growth that brings many benefits to the region, creating a high quality of life for our regional citizens,” said Ken Johnston, Mayor of the City of Red Deer.  

The program is offered through the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Jobs, Economy and Trade, and funds initiatives led by municipalities, Indigenous Communities, and not-for-profit organizations that promote regional economic development and diversification.  

“In working together, we build up our region as a whole and maximize opportunities for residents of Red Deer County and the City of Red Deer,” said Jim Wood, Red Deer County Mayor. “With the benefit of the NRED funding and a strong partnership approach, we are sending the message that Central Alberta is investment ready.”  

Work under the project will include identifying lands suitable for joint economic development by the city and county and work to provide large tracts of land, labour force, complimentary industries, and the urban infrastructure needed to attract investments.  

Funding will also support the city and county’s goals within the Intermunicipal Development Plan, including coordinating infrastructure and services across the jurisdiction boundaries, attracting new businesses, and being future-ready.  

Going forward, the city and county plan to work together to match and leverage the grant funding.
