The Town of Blackfalds request to defer a by-election to fill a councillor vacancy has been permitted by Minister of Municipal Affairs, Ric McIver.

The town requested the waiver following Rebecca Stendie’s resignation.

The Municipal Government Act (MGA) requires municipalities to hold a by-election if a vacancy occurs more than 18-months before a general election.

At the time of Stendie's resignation, the town was 48-days from being exempt.

On March 13, Mayor Jamie Hoover wrote to McIver asking for the deferral due to the short time until the next election, and the additional cost for a by-election would require an increase in budget.

“I understand the rationale you have provided to defer filling the vacancy until the next general election,” McIver said in his reply.

The next general election is scheduled for Oct. 20, 2025.
