New technologies, efficiencies and environmental stewardship will be highlighted today as Red Deer County hosts its 15th annual Entrepreneurial Agriculture Tour.

A mix of both rural and urban neighbours will be hopping on 2 greyhound buses to see some impressive farming operations in the County.

Acting Agricultural Manager Cody McIntosh talks about one stop just off the QE2 south of Red Deer at Mark and Diane Kaun's.

“Mark Kaun’s been farming since 1978, he used to be with a seed farm and now he’s adopting more technology on his farm. He’s been undergoing this 3 year project to evaluate his precision farming tactics, evaluating the inputs into his crops like variable rate fertilizer, and seeding and even focusing on producing malt barley”.

Kaun is working with Alberta based Decisive Farming, a precision agronomy company.

A stop at Red Shed Malting is also expected to draw a lot of interest according to McIntosh.

“Joe and Matt Hamill have been producing malt barley for a few years now and they’re actually becoming the go to for a lot of these craft breweries around.  I think they are supplying about 50 craft breweries with malt to begin their beer production.  I think that will be a great stop, I’ve never seen a malting facility, there’s not too many around, pretty lucky to see that stop”.

Other stops include Gavin and Mabel Hamilton's Black Angus ranch just east of Bowden, and a dairy operation producing about 53,000 litres of milk every two days.

It's a sold out event highlighting how technology is used on the farm.
