One of Canada's largest pork companies has acquired southern Alberta hog producer Pinnacle Farms for an undisclosed price.

Olymel has taken over all of the assets of Pinnacle, including its hog operation that employs 30 people near Strathmore.

The pork giant says its goal is to produce more than 1.5 million hogs annually in Western Canada by 2020 to meet a growing demand from customers.

Olymel employs almost 11,500 people in Canada, including 1500 at a processing plant in Red Deer.
