Even with a few heat warnings, thunder storms, and hail, the crops in Central Alberta are looking pretty good for this time of year.

That’s according to Crop Specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Mark Cutts, who says despite the warm temperatures, crops are able to maintain their moisture levels.

“Really warm temperatures can have an impact on flowering, but I think there’s enough moisture reserves. Central Alberta area the soil moisture readings were considered to be good and excellent, just under 50%. So those are pretty good indicators that we do have some decent soil moisture reserves.”

Cutts says as far he knows, the recent bouts of hail in the area hasn't impacted a lot of the farmers, and says although hail damage can affect the growth cycles, it's still early enough in the year for them to recover.

He also says there has yet to be any major insect infestation in Central Alberta farmers need to concern themselves with.
