A local farmer has answered the Central Alberta Growing Project’s call for land for this year’s charity crop.

The group is gearing up to plant their 22nd charity crop in support of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to help provide food aid, as well as fund implements and seeds for countries around the world in need.

Doug Maas with the local project explains where they’ve managed to secure some land.

“This year we’re going to be east of Lacombe about 15 minutes. We’re going to be at Milton Road and range road 25-1, we have a full quarter section and we’re going to grow canola”.

With the weather the way it is, Maas says they should be seeding soon.

“Hopefully it will be in the next 10 days, with this great hot weather we are getting, it’s going to dry the fields out. We’ve been able to arrange all the work that’s needed for this spring by local farmers and we’re also now just arranging for some more donations of inputs of fertilizer and spray.”

Last year the group’s 21st annual charity crop brought in over $100,000 and when matched 4-1 by the Canadian government the volunteers were able to contribute $520,000 to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to assist with world food aid.

It was their 2nd best year on record.
