Olds College has launched a new Cannabis Production course.

Vice President of Academic & Student Experience and Chief Innovation Officer at the College, Debbie Thompson, said Olds College has been in the horticulture field for over 50 years.

"In the last year or so, we have had some interest from industry for some training for their employees, so in response to that, we have developed and launched a new Cannabis Production program."

Thompson adds, the course takes about two and a half months to complete, with four online courses followed by a two week field study.

The first two courses focus on general horticulture and crop production, the third course teaches cannabis legislation and documentation, and the fourth focuses on cannabis production.

The two week hands-on training takes place at Sundial Growers Inc. and Terra Life Sciences.

Sundial operates a 31,000 square foot cannabis production facility in Rocky View, Alberta, and they're currently building a new production facility in Olds.

“Sundial is committed to the development of a highly skilled cannabis production workforce in Alberta,” explained Sundial’s CEO, Torsten Kuenzlen. “This partnership with Olds College allows us to support our local community while preparing individuals for employment in the cannabis industry.”

Terra Life Sciences produces pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter medications, and premium grade wellness products for both the Canadian and international markets at their facilities in Olds.

“This program is a valuable addition to the Olds College curriculum, given the growing need for educated and trained employees in the medical cannabis sector,” said Dr. Anil Jain, President and CEO of Terra Life Sciences. “We are proud to support our community neighbour and partner, Olds College, and we look forward to welcoming program participants, and program graduates, to Terra Life Sciences.”

The course already has a waiting list of about 50 people, Thompson said.

Thompson added, Olds College is the only post-secondary institute in Alberta offering a Cannabis Production program.
